What is Artificial Intelligence(AI)?

Definition of AI

Creating a machine capable of thinking and learning like humans is called artificial intelligence (AI). Here we study how to program computers to perform tasks that require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, learning, reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving.

We can divide AI into two categories Weak AI and Strong AI based on their capabilities. Weak AI, also known as Narrow AI, is designed to perform a specific task like text generating, image generating, or driving a car. Nowadays there are a lot of weak AI applications like ChatGPT, DALLE, and Midjourney available to use. On the other hand, Strong AI which is also referred to as General AI or Artificial General Intelligence(AGI) is able to perform any intellectual task that a human can do, and still, scientists have failed to build a General AI.

History of AI

The idea of intelligent machines has been around for centuries, dating back to ancient Greek myths and legends. Where sculptors depicted golden artificially intelligent robots. However, it wasn’t until the 1940s that computers became advanced enough to allow the development of AI. In the 1950s, the first AI concept was explored when scientists developed a chess-playing computer system.

Since then, AI has experienced multiple waves of innovation and development, including discoveries in machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and natural language processing(NLP).

Why do we need AI?

The limitations of Ruled-based traditional programming led us to think about AI. Rule-based programs follow a strict set of rules that are pre-decided and can only perform tasks that they have been specifically programmed to do. On the other hand, AI can adapt and learn from its experience, allowing it to perform complex tasks that are impossible for traditional programs.

For example, consider we want to create a program to drive. You might think we can give conditions like ‘If there is a green light, then You can go else, You can’t go, but when it comes to the real world, we have to deal with an infinite number of conditions & situations where we can’t pre-decide and add to the program. But for us driving a car is not a big deal.

How does AI work?

As I mentioned above, we don’t have to define a set of rules or conditions to do a task by AI. AI learns how to perform a task from example data. AI model tries to find the patterns and relationships in the data for a given result and remembers found patterns and relationships then AI will give the same result when it sees that data or similar data to that data.

This AI learning process may be different based on the AI method used to approach AI, and the AI learning type used to train the AI.

AI Methods

Nowadays, there are two methods we can use to approach AI: Machine Learning and Deep Learning.

  • Machine Learning: Machine Learning is one of the older and popular methods in the AI field. This method uses special kinds of learning algorithms to capture the patterns and the relationship from large datasets and then it adjusts the algorithm equation to align with the discovered patterns. After the training process, we can use the adjusted algorithm to make predictions or decisions based on new data.
  • Deep Learning: This is the modern approach to the AI. Instead of using an algorithm, Deep learning uses artificial neural networks which are inspired by the human brain’s interconnected neurons to automatically capture and learn complex patterns and relationships in data. These networks have multiple layers to extract features from input data and each layer consists of units called neurons. When training a neural network parameters called weights and biases of the neurons are adjusted to capture the patterns in data.

Types of AI Learning

There are three types of AI learning: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. Each type has its unique characteristics and applications:

  • Supervised Learning: Supervised learning is a technique used to teach AI systems by providing them with labeled examples. The AI system is fed a large dataset consisting of input data and corresponding output labels.
  • Unsupervised Learning: Unlike supervised learning, unsupervised learning does not rely on labeled data. Instead, it focuses on identifying patterns and similarities within a dataset. Unsupervised learning algorithms group together similar data points or identify clusters based on shared characteristics.
  • Reinforcement Learning: Reinforcement learning involves training an AI system to make decisions based on feedback received from its environment. The AI system interacts with its environment and receives positive or negative rewards based on its actions. Over time, it learns to maximize its rewards by taking action that leads to desirable outcomes.
