In the field of Artificial Intelligence(AI), we divide AI into three generations based on their abilities:  Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)

AGI, or strong AI, is a system that possesses general intelligence similar to humans and is capable of performing any intellectual task a human can do.

ASI refers to AI systems that surpass human intelligence in all aspects, possessing cognitive capabilities to outperform humans.

In simple words, Artificial General Intelligence(AGI) is like the advanced version of narrow AI. Unlike Narrow AI, which is designed for specific jobs and lacks creativity and adaptability, AGI aims to be as smart and versatile as we are in different areas. Basically, it can understand, reason, and do a bunch of stuff as well as or even better than us.

Why is artificial general intelligence so important?

Everyone’s talking about AGI these days. Big AI companies are pouring all their focus and resources into it. There must be a good reason for that, right?  I mean, what can AGI do and how will it affect us humans?

What can artificial general intelligence do?

As mentioned in the definition, AGI is capable of performing tasks at the same level as humans or even better than them. However, this does not refer to physical movements or activities. Rather It’s about intellectual abilities that humans possess, such as decision-making, creativity, reasoning, and understanding.

Is artificial general intelligence good?

Yes and No -Imagine there’s a guy who can do anything you ask him to. He’d be the best assistant or servant you could ever have, right? Since the very beginning, humans have been creating things to make their lives easier. The AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) will make our lives unimaginably easier, and that’s why it’s the greatest innovation in human history.

Now, you might think that if AGI is capable of doing anything humans can do, it could be a bad thing, right? Could it become the expert of our lives? Or could there be a showdown between AI and humans? The answer is nope! You’re right, AGI is capable of doing anything humans can do, but it doesn’t have emotions or self-awareness yet. That keeps it under control.

AGI will make a great servant, so there’s no threat to humankind. However, the rise of AGI might have side effects. Since AGI can do anything a human can do, it will impact the job market negatively. Many people, especially those in white-collar jobs, will be in great danger. This could affect human society badly.
 

Does artificial general intelligence exist?

Nah, there’s no such thing as general AI yet. We still haven’t come up with a perfect artificial general intelligence (AGI) model. That’s why we are sticking with narrow AI for now.

Isn’t ChatGPT an artificial general intelligence?

Nope -You might think that the latest version 4.5 or chapter 3.5 are AGI AIs because they can do some pretty cool stuff like answering questions, providing information, generating creative content, and helping with language-related tasks. However, these AI assistants are not that smart as they lack reasoning, understanding, decision-making abilities, and adaptability like humans. They just match the next word and content based on what they have learned before. That’s why they are called narrow AI.

So, what does AGI AI look like? Well, it’s not necessarily a robot. It could just be a super smart program that makes decisions on a computer, something like Jarvis AI from the Iron Man movie series. Is it just another human being? Not exactly, but it’s close in some ways. It can learn and understand things, but it doesn’t have feelings or consciousness. It’s more like a really smart tool that we created to help us out.

 

Is artificial general intelligence possible?

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is still more of a theoretical concept or something from our wildest imaginations. It’s like a seriously tricky puzzle in the AI field that we have yet to solve. Even though we have made significant strides in creating intelligent systems, building machines that match the full spectrum of human intelligence is still a challenging task. Currently, we lack a clear understanding of how the human brain works, which makes it more complex and complicated work to achieve AGI.

To achieve AGI, we first need to understand clearly how our brains work, but there are no perfect machines to read and scan our brains. Therefore, the possibility of building AGI anytime soon is near zero.

 

When will artificial general intelligence be achieved?

We’re making some serious headway in AI research, achieving what we once thought was impossible. But the real question is: How close are we to AGI? That’s a tough one, but with all the breakthroughs and progress we’re making, it’s starting to look like AGI is more than just a pipe dream.

Let’s talk about the progress we’re making. Researchers and organizations are blowing our minds with all the amazing things they’re doing with AI. Deep Learning(DL), which is inspired by the way our brains work, is a game-changer. It lets machines process a ton of data, recognize patterns, and make spot-on predictions.

And then there’s Natural Language Processing (NLP), which is making it possible for machines to talk to us like real humans. Virtual assistants, chatbots, and language translation systems are all thanks to NLP. Machines are getting better at understanding context, picking up on emotions, and even having meaningful conversations.

Lastly, Reinforcement Learning(RL) is all about teaching AI to play nice with their environment and learn from feedback to get the biggest rewards. We’re teaching machines to crush complex games, boss around robots, and make super-smart decisions. We’re on the fast track to AI progress, my friend!

With all these AI advancements, we can hope that sometime this century (maybe around 2050), we’ll be able to build our first successful AGI model.

 

What’s gonna happen with AGI in the future?

The future of AGI is a mix of excitement and confusion, and experts have different opinions on when it will happen and what it will be like. Some say we’ll have AGI in a few decades, while others think we need to be careful before we make it happen. Either way, it’s going to be a wild ride.

There are a few ways things could go down:

  • Superintelligence: Some experts believe that AGI could lead to superintelligence, where machines outsmart humans by a significant margin. This scenario could potentially result in the resolution of complex global challenges, a revolution in scientific research, and groundbreaking technological advancements.
  • Singularity: The concept of technological singularity suggests that AGI could trigger an era of rapid and exponential progress. Once AGI surpasses human intelligence, it could spark an explosion of innovation, transform societies, and possibly lead to a merging of human and machine intelligence. 
  • Collaborative Intelligence: Rather than seeing AGI as a threat or a replacement for humans, some envision a future where AGI collaborates with human intelligence. This collaborative approach could enhance human capabilities, foster new forms of creativity, and tackle complex challenges that require a blend of human and machine expertise.

Here’s the deal: if AGI ever becomes super smart independently (known as Artificial Superintelligence or ASI), we might have a sticky situation. This is when the whole human versus AI drama could kick in. For now, it’s a “don’t stress” situation, but who knows what the future holds?”

 

AGI is like the big boss of AI. It’s got the potential to change the world as we know it. But we’ve got to be careful, too. We don’t want to end up with a Terminator situation, you know? So while we’re excited about AGI, we’ve got to tread carefully and make sure we’re doing things right.
